It is hard to describe the condition of this poor animal. It is a young cat, but you can hardly tell its age because its body is so wasted. It has open wounds, it’s crawling with maggots both inside the body and outside.
It’s really beyond the power of words to describe the condition of this poor animal. It smells horribly, because of its rotting flesh and massive infection. Worse than any horror movie most of us have ever seen, some of the dead necrotic skin is literally peeling off of its body. We don’t try to shock or sensationalize our rescue stories, but words are quite literally not enough to convey the situation.
Had this cat been rescued sooner and gotten help, its prognosis may have been better. We rushed it to an emergency vet hospital where it was cleaned up and put on supportive care. It lies there like a skeleton in fur. Its bladder was extremely full, which raises the concern that the maggots chewing away at the inner organs may have damaged the neurological function necessary for its intestines and bladder to work properly.
Xrays showed a broken pelvis and other damage suggesting it may have been hit by a car, kicked by an abusive human, or attacked by another animal. We will never know. Its tail was so damaged that it had to be removed. The main concern, other than the maggots still inside, is whether or not the cat, whom we named Ozzy, will regain use of his bladder function to the extent needed to survive. Right now, he can’t empty his bladder and it is very difficult to press on his bladder so it empties.
This young cat, according to the vets and medical staff, is very sweet. It has no reason to trust anybody, but it seems to know that everybody here is just trying to help it at this point. It is still alive, its heart still beats, and where there is life there is hope. We cannot undo the damage that was done. We cannot change the past. We can only do our best to help save a life and move forward. However, we are a kennel of hope. A sanctuary We do our best for every animal we rescue.
